As we have worked to reopen our Churches for Sunday Mass, this is a question that we have been glad to hear. Our work thus far has been a labor of love for a small group of volunteers. If the question of “How can I help?” has crossed your mind, we have some needs that you might be able to assist with.
Greeters and Seaters
Since we have some rules around social distancing and reservations are needed, these roles are just a bit different from our traditional greeters and ushers. In addition, the Bishop is encouraging those who are in the CDC’s ‘vulnerable’ populations (over age 65 and/or underlying health conditions) to remain at home. Many of our greeters and ushers fall into this category, so we need some other people to step up to: check reservations, seat people in a ‘socially distant’ fashion. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before Mass starts to help greet and seat.
Sanitizing Crew
The other task that we have had to tackle is sanitizing our Churches between Masses. This involves spraying and wiping pews, door handles, anything that might be touched in the Church. It takes about 10-15 minutes after Mass and can be done by any teen or adult. This is done after Mass when there are just a few people there, so no crowds.
